During normal inspection processes, additional testing methods are often used to assess the integrity of all types of infrastructure components. Non-destructive testing (NDT) is a very valuable tool that helps engineers look inside a structural member investigating the entire component (vs. one location) and accomplishes this without causing damage to the member. This geophysical testing technology can be applied to bridges, buildings, retaining walls, foundations, roads, tunnels, culverts, pipes, tanks, dams, post tensioned tendon/ducts and soil/rock deposits. If the condition of a structural component can be verified as sound/competent, then its reuse often reduces rehabilitation cost and saves resources.

A variety of non-destructive testing theory, application, and equipment that will be discussed includes:

  • Sonic/Ultrasonic testing
  • Impact Echo (IE) & Pulse Velocity (PV)
  • Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)
  • Ultrasonic Thickness (UT) Testing
  • Electrical Methods


Dr. Brian Pailes is a senior project manager with Vector Corrosion Services of Tampa Bay, Florida. Dr. Pailes has extensive experience in the field of non-destructive evaluation performed on a wide variety of different structures. He has a broad knowledge of structural engineering through schooling and work experience. He is a registered professional engineer, having earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Northeastern University, a master’s in civil engineering from the University of Virginia, and a PhD in civil engineering from Rutgers University.
