Course Description

This presentation will discuss welding fabrication requirements applicable to highway structures. The presentation will provide an overview of the different types of welding processes, codes and specifications, symbols, joints, various weld types, common weld defects and nondestructive testing (NDT). Furthermore, the presentation will cover the AWS code requirements for weld procedure specifications (WPS), procedure qualification records (PQR), and welder performance.


Lonnie Anderson is a certified welding inspector (CWI) and Level II nondestructive testing (NDT) specialist with a technical college certificate in welding and an associate’s degree in NDT. He has a thorough understanding of welding processes for a variety of materials and over twenty years of experience in structural steel welding, fabrication, and inspection. Lonnie has supervised the welding fabrication of steel, aluminum, and stainless steel elements of equipment and structures. He is a lead inspector for shop fabrication and on-site inspection of steel connections performing visual inspections (VT), ultrasonic testing (UT), magnetic particle testing (MT), dye penetrate testing (PT), shear stud inspection, metal deck weld inspection, and bolt tension inspection. Lonnie develops and performs the review and approval of weld procedure qualification records (PQR), weld procedure specifications (WPS), and welder qualifications.
