Description

North Dakota public agencies deal with winter weather many months of the year. This training examines current methods of winter maintenance on the local transportation system as well as some newer technologies. The goals of this course are to:

  • provide an overview of current winter maintenance practices,
  • review essential elements of a winter maintenance policy and who should know those elements,
  • identify tools for winter maintenance, and
  • examine benefits/concerns with those tools on both paved and gravel roads.

Motor-grader best practices. Gary Steiner, Burleigh County Operator (both training sites). Operators will participate in a group discussion and demonstrate best practices of snow removal using the motor-grader which will be available on-site for training.

Snowplow truck best practices. Dennis Moritz, Barnes County Operator (West Fargo training site).Todd Miller, Stark County (Stark County training site). Operators participate in a group discussion and will demonstrate best practices of snow removal using the snowplow truck which will be available on-site for training.

NDDOT. West Fargo training site: Dean Brown, Maintenance Mechanic II, Fargo District
Stark County training site: Perry Nistler, Beach Section Supervisor
Wade Szudera, Beach Section Trans Tech III
Allan Urlacher, Dickinson District Shop Supervisor will provide expertise on the following topics:

  • Product selection for anti-icing and de-icing
  • Provide expertise on truck calibration
  • Provide the importance of snow equipment maintenance
  • NDDOT will also provide hands-on training with a Force America controller and calibration

county, state, township, and city maintenance personnel, supervisors, and elected officials.
