Description

Corrosion is the leading cause of concrete deterioration and repair. Corrosion mitigation can extend the service life of repairs and is key to bridge preservation. Understanding corrosion mechanics and kinetics allows bridge engineers, materials engineers, planners and maintenance personnel to develop and implement approaches to effectively mitigate corrosion. This presentation uses the results of independent laboratory research and data from monitored concrete restoration projects in North America to illustrate effective and ineffective corrosion mitigation strategies. The principles presented will help you to understand why the approach was effective or not.

The following topics will be covered:

  • Why does steel corrode?
  • How do you determine the root cause of corrosion and concrete deterioration problems
  • Corrosion mitigation options for new and old structures, including;
    • Coatings and sealers
    • Galvanic protection
    • Chloride extraction
  • Corrosion and corrosion protection of post-tensioned structures
  • Case histories

Speaker(s)

David Whitmore, P. Eng., FCSCE, FACI, FICRI has over 25 years of experience repairing corroded reinforced concrete structures. David is President of Vector Corrosion Technologies Ltd and is past chairman of ACI (American Concrete Institute) E706: Repair Education Committee. Dave is a co-author of TRB’s second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP 2) Report S2-R19A-RW-1: Bridges for Service Life Beyond 100 Years which developed approaches and procedures to enhance service life design for existing and new bridges.

Target Audience

Structural and materials engineers, construction inspection staff, state and local government road superintendents.
