Description

This presentation will cover research conducted by South Dakota State University under Mountain Plains Consortium research funding. The main objective of this study was to implement a systematic method for evaluating Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) techniques to determine their applicability to bridge construction and rehabilitation projects in South Dakota from a cost effectiveness standpoint. This research was geared toward developing both the knowledge base and the tool to evaluate if implementation of ABC techniques is beneficial to a particular project scenario based on South Dakota local cost and experience data. Examples for using the developed tool were also included in this study to illustrate the use of the evaluation tool for ABC decision making in South Dakota. This presentation will cover the following topics:

  • ABC methods used by various states in the U.S. as identified by the literature search
  • A catalog of ABC techniques to identify options available to decision makers
  • Quantified benefit indicators to assess cost-benefit ratios using traffic volumes and site considerations
  • A suggested/simplified procedure for evaluating ABC implementation for candidate bridges
