This presentation will outline the operational analysis methodology for determining the appropriate roundabout lane configuration. Attendees will walk through numerous hands-on single-lane and multi-lane roundabout operational analysis examples. Single-lane entries, multi-lane entries, right turn bypass lanes, and exclusive left turn lanes with spirals will be covered. Example problems will be given out to attendees and results will be discussed as time allows within the presentation period.


Kevin Kuhlow, PE, is a project manager at Ayres Associates. He has focused on roundabouts for the past 18 years, including feasibility studies, operational analysis, design, review, construction observation assistance, public involvement, and training. Kuhlow has been involved with developing hundreds of roundabouts throughout North America since 2000, ranging from single-lane roundabouts to complex three-lane roundabouts. He is highly skilled in providing roundabout education and has extensive experience working with agencies, communities, and the public to gain acceptance for challenging roundabout projects. He has conducted numerous roundabout trainings for various DOT's including Florida, Georgia and Wisconsin. Kuhlow worked closely with WisDOT staff to develop statewide roundabout educational materials and the state's most recent roundabout design guidelines.
