Roundabouts - Single-Lane High Speed Rural Solutions for High Crash Locations

This presentation will look at possible solutions for rural 2- and 4-way stop intersections that would benefit from a single-lane roundabout. Concepts presented would include:

  • Circle size
  • Entry, exit and circulatory roadway widths
  • Approach design
  • Speed control
  • Truck accommodations, including oversize and overweight vehicles
  • Signing
  • Pavement marking
  • Lighting


Kevin Kuhlow, PE, is a project manager at Ayres Associates. He has focused on roundabouts for the past 18years, including feasibility studies, operational analysis, design, review, construction observation assistance, public involvement, and training. Kuhlow has been involved with developing hundreds of roundabouts throughout North America since 2000, ranging from single-lane roundabouts to complex three-lane roundabouts. He is highly skilled in providing roundabout education and has extensive experience working with agencies, communities, and the public to gain acceptance for challenging roundabout projects. He has conducted numerous roundabout trainings for various DOT’s including Florida, Georgia and Wisconsin. Kuhlow worked closely with WisDOT staff to develop statewide roundabout educational materials and the state’s most recent roundabout design guidelines.
