This course is designed to take someone through a site visit and what items are of value for analysis in asset performance. Pre-land disturbance activities include evaluation of items such as:

  • Existing soils and their characteristics
  • Hydrology of soils on site, and runoff observations
  • Cross highway drainage, and analysis of receiving waters
  • Current vegetation and status of growth
  • Present species or surrounding habitat
  • Traffic flow observations and user interface
  • Slopes, toe stabilization, and structural fill limits
  • Field verification of design elevations
  • Site physical characteristics
  • Community values and needs surrounding project area

By taking preliminary steps to ensure the site visit before design is effective; a project can be evaluated so that the final design provides for safety and operational improvement but in harmony with aesthetic, historic and environmental resources of the community. The goal is to provide flexibility through site visits to create the most appropriate long term solution, balanced with goals of the asset ownership.
