TLN - Technical Communication As A Writer & Presenter
- Mar 31-May 5, 2017 (10:30 am - 12:00 pm Central Time) – Webinar (6 Friday Sessions )
Professionals employed in technical fields (engineering, environmental, financial, human relations, customer services, etc.) must communicate, but they find getting their ideas across can sometimes be difficult. This webinar-based event establishes the fundamentals of effective technical and business communication and will show you how to present your ideas clearly and concisely. This material will also address how to prepare and deliver precise technical or business presentations.
This short course will be comprised of six 90-minute webinars backed up by online exercises and reading materials. Participants will have graded weekly homework assignments that will address the essential tools needed to produce well-written, error-free text. You’ll learn how to reduce bureaucratically verbose communication that is so common among technically oriented professionals. “Work-along” web based material will make the course highly participative, with exercises, assignments, and open interactions.
Upon completion of the presentation series, participants will be able to:
Plan, compose, and compile a report or similar technical document.
Edit their own work, before others read.
Distinguish between good plain text and verbose officialese.
Identify the basic rules of English.
Recognize the elements of persuasion in text and presentations.
Prepare and deliver a short presentation.
(1-2 hours per week, limited to 20 volunteers for presenter review of homework; may consist of previously composed reports for review. DOT staff are given preference on writing review.)
